http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3283 Interface design has often been considered a subsection of interaction design Moggridge 2007 L ouml wgren amp Stolterman 2004 Bagnara amp Crampton Smith 2006 In the shift from designing objects to designing experiences interaction design needs to investigate temporal as well as spatial form Redstr ouml m 2001 Maz eacute amp Redstr ouml m 2005 and to see computation as basic material From a social cultural and humanistic perspective studies of the design of interactions and their contexts of use can be understood in terms of mediated communication and the historical social playful and aesthetic in digital design Blythe Overbeeke Monk amp Wright 2003 Lunenfeld 1999 This approach has been framed as Communication Design Morrison et al in press This mediational perspective of digital communication is informed by studies in new media social semiotics socio-cultural studies of learning and work and practice-based research into multimodal composition in which mediated discourse itself undergoes change through active use Jones amp Norris 2005 Morrison in press This view is distinct from the structuralist and directional or transmission models of communication e g Crilly Maier amp Clarkson 2008 that are not rooted in cultural and mediational theory From a Communication Design perspective the interface itself mediates it is understood as socially and culturally constructed and situated Such a perspective is not very widely articulated in discussions of the interface in design research Further few studies exist of dynamic digital interfaces and their multimodal characteristics from a specifically media and Communication Design view e g Skjulstad 2007 In their design activity interaction designers invest heavily in the shaping of interfaces as symbolic and cultural texts Alongside this attention to design and with reference to user-driven studies we also need to unpack the features and possible functions of these emerging forms of mediated communication The proliferation of movement in the interface demands that we pay attention to a variety of media types genre conventions and earlier media and to the ways that elements of these are combined in different configurations Social semiotics provides some means for relating the various graphical animational and kinetic aspects of dynamic interfaces within a wider communicative perspective 3 Jon Olav H Eikenes and Andrew Morrison 2010 Jon Olav H Eikenes and Andrew Morrison 2010 Navimation Exploring Time Space amp Motion in the Design of Screen-based Interfaces http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3251 This article works out the main characteristics of practice theory a type of social theory which has been sketched by such authors as Bourdieu Giddens Taylor late Foucault and others Practice theory is presented as a conceptual alternative to other forms of social and cultural theory above all to culturalist mentalism textualism and intersubjectivism The article shows how practice theory and the three other cultural-theoretical vocabularies differ in their localization of the social and in their conceptualization of the body mind things knowledge Objects in Innovation Processes http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3243 In our paper we focus on how design prototypes can foster communications in organizations that deal with the development of innovations We distinguish the impact of prototypes between two different organizational levels we first conduct the impact of prototypes at the level of organizational design teams that develop ideas and concepts for solutions We then focus on the impact of prototypes on the level of organizational teams and departments that have not been part of the initial design phase but are responsible for further developments in the innovation process e g production financing and marketing Previous research has indicated that prototypes have a significant influence on both organizational levels Prototypes in the best cases can become so-called boundary objects between different domains and stakeholders and may deliver positive effects within the innovation process However the successful management of stakeholders in this context remains highly challenging In this paper we want to address these difficulties as well as the current state of research in this field We propose that a prototype does not only stand for an important design technique but should moreover be regarded as a management tool that can be integrated into a structured dialogue between stakeholders We provide first insights on what a structured dialogue based on prototypes can mean and what it thereby should imply We will synthesize prior research findings and begin to develop a concept on how to utilize prototypes as boundary objects from a management perspective Holger Rhinow Eva K ouml ppen and Christoph Meinel 2012 Holger Rhinow Eva K ouml ppen and Christoph Meinel Prototypes as Boundary Objects to see how the city was before the earthquakes and building demolitions Using an Android mobile phone people can walk around the city and see life-sized virtual models of what the buildings looked like on site before they were demolished and see pictures and written information Hundreds of 3D models of key city buildings have been made available from architect Jason Mill of ZNO while the Christchurch City Council and Historic Places Trust have provided photographs and building histories CityViewAR is based on the HIT Lab NZ Android AR platform which uses the GPS and compass sensors of mobile phones to enable virtual information to be overlaid on live video of the real world Android AR makes it easy for Android developers to build their own outdoor AR applications The software was previously used for showing individual buildings but this is the first time that it has been used to show dozens of buildings at once and the first time in world that mobile phone AR has been used for earthquake reconstruction HIT Lab NZ 2011 http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3223 Sun, 10 Mar 2013 19:30:08 +1000 Media technology convergence from Desktop to mobile http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3207 When that Apple II came out it really could do nothing It could show text and after we waited a bit we had these things called images Remember when images were first possible with a computer those gorgeous full-color images And then after a few years we got CD-quality sound It was incredible You could listen to sound on the computer And then movies via CD-ROM It was amazing Remember that excitement And then the browser appeared The browser was great but the browser was very primitive very narrow bandwidth Text first then images we waited CD-quality sound over the Net then movies over the Internet Kind of incredible And then the mobile phone occurred text images audio video And now we have iPhone iPad Android with text video audio etc You see this little pattern here We re kind of s Alertbox column was published on his useit com website This was a good run but it s now time to unify this content with the main Nielsen Norman Group website Thus the old Alertbox columns have now been moved from useit com to nngroup com and future columns will be published directly on nngroup com Even after the dot-com bubble burst there was a long period where the barebones useit com design stood out and elevated the site above many latecomer UX websites Cutting through the clutter is an important value on the web which has so much more information than anybody needs However eventually it makes less sense to rebel against the excesses of the past Also with almost 500 Alertbox columns published it became clear that more navigational apparatus was needed One solution could have been to redesign useit com to make it more like other sites But why bother If a big change was needed anyway it was better to use the opportunity to integrate the articles with the company information and host all the material on the same website with a single navigation structure and a single search So that s what we did no more microsite for the Alertbox The Nielsen Norman Group 31 December 2012 assists thought by evoking a visual image while on the other hand a metaphor which is technically dead e g iron resolution has in effect reverted to being an ordinary word and can generally be used without loss of vividness But in between these two classes there is a huge dump of worn-out metaphors which have lost all evocative power and are merely used because they save people the trouble of inventing phrases for themselves Examples are Ring the changes on take up the cudgel for toe the line ride roughshod over stand shoulder to shoulder with play into the hands of no axe to grind grist to the mill fishing in troubled waters on the order of the day Achilles heel swan song hotbed Many of these are used without knowledge of their meaning what is a rift for instance and incompatible metaphors are frequently mixed a sure sign that the writer is not interested in what he is saying Some metaphors now current have been twisted out of their original meaning without those who use them even being aware of the fact For example toe the line is sometimes written as tow the line Another example is the hammer and the anvil now always used with the implication that the anvil gets the worst of it In real life it is always the anvil that breaks the hammer never the other way about a writer who stopped to think what he was saying would avoid perverting the original phrase George University Budapest Hungary 24-26 June 2013 The purpose of the annual Arts Conference is to create an intellectual platform for the arts and arts practices and to create an interdisciplinary conversation on the role of the arts in society It is intended as a place for critical engagement examination and experimentation of ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world e on stage in studios and theaters in classrooms in museums and galleries on the streets and in communities Its scope is deliberately broad and ambitious Our times demand nothing less than cross-disciplinary and holistic approaches The breadth of the Conference and its accompanying Journal however are without prejudice to finely grained discussion of the specific the local and the grounded practices The Conference provides a venue and a framework for the arts and art practices that are situated within the context of international art expositions festivals and biennials engaged with the international production of art and its global distribution networks This Conference aims to discover what values instincts and common ground may exist within the arts and their practices and sites of reception around the world Your participation shapes the Conference itself We are inviting proposals for paper presentations workshops interactive sessions posters exhibits or colloquia See Proposal Types Virtual participation is available for those who are unable to attend the conference in person Proposal ideas that extend beyond these thematic areas will also be considered For more information about the ideas and themes underlying this community see Our Focus http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3136 Wed, 09 Jan 2013 13:19:12 +1000
