HyperNormalisation our retreat into a simplified version of the world http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=4242 The documentary is inspired by the unpredictable events of recent times ndash from the rise of Donald Trump to Brexit the war in Syria the endless migrant crisis and random bomb attacks It seeks to explain both why these chaotic events are happening and why we and our leaders can t understand them Curtis s theory is that Westerners - politicians journalists experts and members of the public alike - have retreated into a simplified and often completely fake version of the world But because it is all-encompassing we accept it as normal HyperNormalisation explores this hollow world by looking back at 40 years of events and profiling a diverse cast of characters such as the Assad dynasty Donald Trump Henry Kissinger Patti Smith the early performance artists in New York President Putin intelligent machines Japanese gangsters and suicide bombers Holly Barrett 22nd How unlikely that one of the least definable films from the last half-century would also be one of the most beloved A favorite of classroom AV diversions and an abridged presentation on the very first episode of 60 Minutes helped make it the most viewed educational film of all time I don t know what it all means Saul Bass himself admitted and his Why Man Creates 1968 is far more loose and playful than the rigid thesis its title might imply In fact it is the searching and open-ended nature of the various vignettes that perhaps makes the film resonate so strongly with viewers Though an Oscar 174 -winner for Documentary Short Subject the film is almost entirely invented apart from recollections of old masters like Edison Hemingway and Einstein and brief encounters with scientists striving to innovate for the betterment of mankind Creators invariably encounter problems and have no choice but to persevere in the face of discouragement If the film argues anything it is that the unbridled pursuit of new ideas makes us uniquely human Sean Savage http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=4174 Fri, 29 Jan 2016 10:10:28 +1000 Addiction is a social rather than individual phenomenon Britain on Film collection of archive footage goes online today http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=4069 Around 2 500 films including home movies documentaries and news footage from Victorian times up to the 1980s is now available online The grainy footage is of dozens of shifty men in flat caps smoking cigarettes talking to each other in a market square some exchanging money others nervously keeping watch And then men in trilbies spring from nowhere making arrests and bundling people into vans The remarkable surveillance footage is from 1935 and is significant because it was the first film used as evidence in a British court of law Police or specifically PC Saunders ndash proudly named in the end credit ndash filmed what was an illegal betting ring going on in Chesterfield rsquo s market square The film is one of around 2 500 from the BFI archives ndash that are now accessible online via the BFI Player from Tuesday as part of a huge project called Britain on Film They include home available via JISC Journal Archives http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=4035 Few titles sum up an era and a movement like Spare Rib When the first issue came out in July 1972 many women were starting to question their position and role in society The magazine was an active part of the emerging women s liberation movement It challenged the stereotyping and exploitation of women in what was the first national magazine of its kind It supported collective realistic solutions to the hurdles women faced and reached out to women from all backgrounds Spare Rib became the debating chamber of feminism in the UK It continued until January 1993 and the full archive of 239 magazines provides a valuable insight into women s lives and this period of feminist activity http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=4035 instigated internet human flesh search HFS or cyber manhunt in western countries 3 4 that it has become a cyber phenomenon HFS originated in China The term was translated from Au Ren Rou Sou Suo 5 which broadly refers to ldquo an act of searching information about individuals or any subjects through the online collaboration of multiple users rdquo 6 Participation and collaboration by users play a vital role in the HFS process On one hand HFS practices which are considered a manifestation of citizen empowerment and civil participation are supported and applauded by other countries On the other majority of high-profile HFS cases in China have become aggressive and vicious arousing research interest on the involved legal 3 privacy 7 and social issues 4 Although Chen and Sharma 1 provide a comprehensive review of HFS that is supplemented by Chao 2 there is still a gap in research and in the analysis of HFS on a global context The Taiwanese context is worthy of review because despite the abundance of HFS incidents occurring in the country few studies on those have been shared to the international community Yu-Hui Tao Chian-Hsueng Chao 2011 Tao Y -H and Chao C -S Analysis of human
