SCALE-UP solving the shortcomings in traditional physics instruction http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3279 Studio workshop classes such as SCALE-UP Student-Centered Activities for Large Enrollment Undergraduate Programs give instructors another choice by replacing the lecture laboratory format with 4e6 hours of activity-based instruction per week typically in 2-hour blocks This format has several advantages over the traditional lecture laboratory format Because the entire class is taught in the same room with the same students and instructors in each class all activities including laboratory experiments can be arranged to build on one another in sequence for greater learning impact 14 than when some activities are taught in small sections running parallel to the lecture course When a lab section is taught as a separate course it is often weeks or at best a few days ahead of or behind the lecture and for some students the lab course is not even taken in the same term as the lecture Additionally even in an interactive lecture students can avoid instructors by hiding in the middle of the row away from the aisles In the studio format instructors can freely circulate and interact with any group at any time Robert Beichner and Jeffery Saul http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3279 Tue, 16 Apr 2013 13:46:37 +1000 Finland s school system accomplishes some impressive feats so what makes Finnish students so successful http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3238 Students get plenty of teacher interaction Finland and New York City have the same number of teachers But Finland has nearly half the number of students Standardized testing is kept to a minimum before a New York student reaches high school he or she will have taken 10 standardized tests Collectively US students take 100 million standardized tests a year Finland s only standardized test is taken when students are 16 years old Kids have more time to be kids an average us 5th grader has 50 minimum of homework per day Finnish students rarely do homework until their teens And while us elementary students average 27 minutes of recess students in Finland get about 75 minutes a day Finland knows good teachers are occurred just over a decade and a half ago - a relatively short time in academic terms Early course delivery via the web had started by 1994 soon followed by a more structured approach using the new category of course management systems 1 Since that time online education has slowly but steadily grown in popularity to the point that in the fall of 2010 almost one-third of U S postsecondary students were taking at least one course online Fast forward to 2012 a new concept called Massive Open Online Courses MOOCs is generating widespread interest in higher education circles Most significantly it has opened up strategic discussions in higher education cabinets and boardrooms about online education Stanford MIT Harvard the University of CaliforniaeBerkeley and others have thrown their support - in terms of investment resources and presidential backing - behind the transformative power of MOOCs and online education National media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal the New York Times and The Atlantic are touting what David Brooks has called the campus tsunami of online education Unfortunately a natural side effect of this new interest in education and educational technology is an increase in hype and in shallow descriptions of the potential for new educational models to replace the established system All too often the public discussion has become stuck in a false dichotomy of traditional vs online - a dichotomy that treats all online models as similar and that ignores blended or hybrid approaches This false dichotomy is even more evident now that discussions are spilling into national media forums But in fact as my colleague Molly Langstaff has described educational technology is interacting with innovative educational courses and programs to create not only new language but also multiple models for delivering education Phil Hill 1 November 2012 Educause Quarterly http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3135 Wed, 09 Jan 2013 12:11:36 +1000 Privileging the collective the tradition of the atelier method in art and design education http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3110 Art and design education has broadly settled on two categories of pedagogical frameworks both evolutions from historical precedents The first of these categories is driven by the spirit of the design collective and comprises the art school studio or atelier model This was established by the private Florentine art schools of the renaissance from around the 15th Century King 2003 always with a focus on making as well as learning from the group - from both peers and Masters Later this model of learning through practice carried over to the art schools of England in his 1858 inaugural address for the Cambridge School of Art John Ruskin Ruskin 1858 spoke about the relative futility of formal teaching per se and instead the pressing need for students to learn by repeated and applied making For applied craft and design this studio approach was the method under the influential Bauhaus School 1919-1933 in Germany Droste 2005 The second category derives from the teaching of industrial arts and is typically driven by the far greater student volume processing needs of the institution This category comprises the hot desking or increasingly the no-desking model with large taught classes in lecture format and occasional group tutorials Such a model is often the norm for universities academic courses The model spread to the creative courses that were more typically offered by polytechnics in the UK The first polytechnic dates back to the early nineteenth century Fox 1832-1854 although most were established in the 1960 s with a remit of applied education in industry and science for work In many countries the term technical college is the same as a polytechnic - in both the UK and Australia many of these colleges converted into universities in the last 30 years Ashley Hall and Tom Barker 2010 Hall A and T Barker 2010 Design collectives knowledge Graduates also need a breadth of knowledge and skills which some commentators have referred to as being T-Shaped These additional skills include the ability to work with and increasingly work across disciplines entrepreneurial attitudes and a knowledge of the business contexts in which they will operate All undergraduate Ravensbourne programmes incorporate curriculum and learning activities designed to develop these skills in our students Cross-disciplinary collaborative projects offer students the opportunity to work in teams with other disciplines The course structure draws on the creative synergies and frictions of the different disciplines at Ravensbourne and provides physical and intellectual opportunities for students to meet learn and work together with students NTU is introducing a new scheme for assessing undergraduate students work The scheme is known as grade-based assessment or GBA A major advantage of GBA is that it ensures that there is a direct link between the expected learning outcomes of the part of the course being assessed and what you the student have demonstrated in the assessment This short video explains this The specific arrangements relating to the assessment of a module will be set out in module documentation Previously assessed work was awarded a mark usually a percentage Following the introduction of GBA each piece of assessed work will be awarded one of 17 grades You will be informed about what is expected of you in order to achieve a particular grade This information will mean that feedback on your work will be clear and you will be able to evaluate your progress towards your final degree classification Nottingham Trent University This animated presentation provides an overview of the grade-based marking scheme which is being introduced at Nottingham Trent University for the 2012 13 academic year The presentation is clearly aimed at NTU students and refers to the university-specific VLE called the NOW - the NTU Online Workspace despite this the clip covers issues which I expect have more general relevance to students studying at other institutions http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=2912 Wed, 26 Sep 2012 one particular cloud app rather it is the pure web with a toolset enabling the person owner of that domain to constantly adapt it to new developments It grows with the person over time and constantly reflects new interior designs and remodeling as needed A PLE allows the owner of it to be a true author contributor and social interactor with the wider web ecology while still maintaining the stability of a personal home base on the web which is not dependent on the evolving marketing strategies of free portal services Unlike the exhibition model digital portfolios a PLE is much more naturally attuned to the authentic personal and professional needs of the owner Of course as in a digital portfolio we all like to naturally exhibit display new features However the passive role of an exhibit is only one of many features of a fluid PLE site Along with exhibiting this or that project a PLE might just as likely be hosting a discussion on a particular topic asking visitors to complete a quick survey providing a quick breaking news report about storm damage in one neighborhood contributing a how to screencast video on a recently learned techniqueathe possibilities are endless W3PLE
