MA students at the University of Hertfordshire It explores how contemporary kinetic typography relies on historical developments such as 3D woodblock print Romain du Roi and Modernist modular lettering Students are encouraged to let their design work respond to historical research This does not mean creating something that looks old or retro rather creating something innovative and new by re-imagining historical ideas in light of new technologies and contexts Barbara Brownie http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3284 Thu, 25 Apr 2013 13:20:19 +1000 The debate in 1991 digital or hand-crafted type http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3272 Metal setting is practised today by only a handful of specialists but it continues to provide the standards by which good typesetting is judged Photosetting and the computer setting which has largely displaced it are criticised for being too perfect and lacking the character of hand-crafted type Now increasingly designers are using desktop publishing systems such as the Macintosh to do their typesetting The technology has matured considerably over the last two years and the time is ripe for a reassessment is good typesetting possible on the synthesis http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3089 Why waste time on expensive experiments when the right answer is obvious The flaw in this thinking is that creativity is an iterative process in which you synthesize the final result from a variety of sources and thousands of potential solutions It is not purely a deductive process with a single right answer When you fail to experiment broadly you are building your solution from an anemic set of mental and technical resources It is the equivalent of trying to design a bridge when the only material you ve tested is paper You can certainly build a bridge but it will not be nearly as good compared to someone who experimented with a broad range of materials and construction techniques including steel or concrete Daniel Cook 16 August 2010 still absolutely imperative to brand success Rather than assuming that the physical space is being hindered by the growth of digital activity brands and designers are beginning to embrace the newer channels where consumers are choosing to spend their time and deliver a physical environment that adds value around these Get the basic understanding of the new purpose of the physical space right and the physical manifestation of the design will boom from there The key is to design interiors that can respond and morph with social and cultural shifts so that the spaces become a form of cultural commentary adding value to the popular activities of today s audiences Above all interior design must be approached in a way that ensures that the brand communicates a relevant message through this critical channel This can be achieved by considering and responding to three key topics cultural relevance social context and technology integration Lucy Johnston Design Week Fig The Anthropologist amp grey blobs further on there are eleven more These are called the u graphics symbols u amp are used for drawing pictures You can enter these from the keyboard using graphics mode except for space which is an ordinary symbol using the nbsp img src attachment ZX81 invl gif align ABSMIDDLE height 14 width 14 cursor the black square is inverse space You use the 20 keys that have graphics symbols written on them For instance suppose you want the symbol nbsp img src attachment ZX81 symt gif align ABSMIDDLE height 14 width 14 which is on the T key Press strong GRAPHICS strong to get the nbsp img src invg gif align ABSMIDDLE height 14 width 14 cursor amp then press shifted T From the previous description of the graphics mode you would expect to get an inverse video symbol but shifted T is http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3020 A brief is basically a set of instructions that set out what you want your designers to do along with the objectives and parameters of the design project It should make clear what falls within - and outside - the scope of the work This will help everybody refer back to where they started and make sure that the design work is developing according to your objectives It will also help you determine how successful the project has been when you reach the end Unfortunately all too often briefs are agreed verbally - but a well-considered brief can act as a general grounding document if the project appears to be heading in the wrong direction so it s well worth putting something in writing And remember the brief isn t carved in stone it can be adapted as you go along as long as it s done in collaboration with everyone involved and the new version is also written down Design Council UK http://folksonomy.co/?permalink=3020 Sun, 11 Nov 2012 15:15:22 Presentations Due 6 December 2012 The International Conference on Design Principles and Practices its associated design journals the On Design Book Series and the Design News Blog are sites of discussion which explore the meaning and purpose of design Participants in these forums also speaking in grounded ways about the task of design and the use of designed artifacts and processes The Conference Journal Book Imprint and News Blog support a cross-disciplinary knowledge community bringing together researchers teachers and practitioners to discuss the nature and future of design The resulting conversations weave between the theoretical and the empirical research and application market pragmatics and social idealism In professional and disciplinary terms the conference journals
