From LMS to VLE or from supermarkets to airports: Classifying elearning platforms using metaphors
"This paper presents a rational model developed to make sense of various elearning platforms currently in use in Australian universities. The conceptualisation and organisation of the elearning platforms is underpinned by an educational psychology framework of social construction of meaning, data visualisation and story telling for meaning making. The model explains how various elearning platforms can be integrated to represent a threedimensional, hierarchical construct that has the potential to aid understandings about the utility of information systems (IS) for learning and teaching. The model shows that LAMS, which has gained increasing popularity in Europe (Laurillard & Masterman, 2010), is usefully depicted as a ‘middle ground’ system, successfully bridging conventional LMSs and more advanced IS, referred here as (MU)VLEs (Multi-User Virtual Learning Environments). The model has important implications on how university lecturers, classroom teachers and students come to engage with an increasingly complex elearning environment."

Technology Enhanced Learning: ubiquitous access to knowledge
"Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) research aims to improve the quality of formal and informal learning, and to make accessible forms of knowledge that were simply inaccessible before. But research does not translate easily into practice, at school, in higher education or in the workplace. The forms of pedagogy that characterise learning in these settings have remained more or less invariant even when radical technologies have been introduced."

ALT Open Access Repository: providing support for e-learning professionals
"The Association for Learning Technology (ALT) is a professional and scholarly association which seeks to bring together all those with an interest in the use of learning technology. For more information about ALT please visit the ALT website http://www.alt.ac.uk.
The ALT Open Access Repository was developed as part of the wALTer project in conjunction with the establishment of the Online Learning Knowledge Garden by project partners Cranfield University.
wALTer is a repository start up project part funded by JISC under the JISC Repositories and Preservation Programme, the help of which is gratefully acknowledged. A key issue for the Learning Design sector is the skills and knowledge of new entrants to a rapidly growing professional body. In order to be effective, a resource base for such staff development requires frameworks both to support practice and for professional accreditation. This project aims to provide a resource base and supporting technologies to ensure effective support for e-learning professionals. It builds on a number of existing resources, bodies of knowledge and expertise, technologies and professional frameworks and provides the first stage in a planned evolution path for a growing sustainable resource base."
