Interaction Design Education Summit 2014

Wednesday, 5 February 2014, Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) at Hilversum (http://interaction14.ixda.org/venues/).

"At a moment in time where everybody and everything is constantly interacting – through the use of networks, apps, products, media and services – educating students to design these interactions is not only needed, but also a fundamental challenge. Rapid developments in society and technology put increasingly high demands on the knowledge and skills of future interaction designers. Challenging traditional institutions, some companies have started programs for in–house training. At the same time, alternative educational platforms – such as edX, Udacity and Interaction–Design.org – are offering open access to high–level learning materials.

To successfully address these developments, interaction design education might need to reinvent itself."

What is a PLE?

"For students and lifelong adult learners, we can think of such a permanent home domain as a personal learning environment (PLE). It is not one particular cloud app, rather it is the 'pure web' with a toolset enabling the person/owner of that domain to constantly adapt it to new developments. It grows with the person over time and constantly reflects new 'interior designs' and 'remodeling' as needed. A PLE allows the owner of it to be a true author, contributor, and social interactor with the wider web ecology while still maintaining the stability of a personal home base on the web which is not dependent on the evolving marketing strategies of free portal services...

Unlike the 'exhibition model' digital portfolios, a PLE is much more naturally attuned to the authentic personal and professional needs of the owner. Of course, as in a digital portfolio, we all like to naturally exhibit/display new features. However the passive role of an 'exhibit' is only one of many features of a fluid PLE site. Along with exhibiting this or that project, a PLE might just as likely be hosting a discussion on a particular topic, asking visitors to complete a quick survey, providing a quick 'breaking news' report about storm damage in one neighborhood, contributing a 'how to' screencast video on a recently learned technique…the possibilities are endless!"

open: output (design student portfolio site)

"'open :output' is an online community which allows students of design and architecture to create their own personal portfolio websites free of charge. The platform makes the work of young talent from all over the world visible to wider public. The works on 'open :output' would otherwise probably never have been published. 'open :output' offers students the opportunity to present themselves as designers and architects in a strong network. The power of students as well as educational institutions of design and architecture throughout the world are promoted to the general public by 'open :output'."

Sandra Mardin's Lofidelica

"Lofidelica is a personal blog that I've been running since 2005, initially via blogspot and later migrated to tumblr. In the beginnings, I used the blog to post weekly playlists, reviews and posts related to my radio shows at Kanal 103 in Skopje, Macedonia. Thus, you're likely to stumble across some playlists in the archives of this blog (10/2009–10/2010). The radio show stopped running in 2010 after I moved to the UK.

Today, I use the blog to assemble my writing and projects across different platforms, as an online portfolio. Besides music, I also blog and reblog anything that interests me in culture, design, semiotics, trends, insight, advertising, research etc."

Dribbble: a show and tell web application for designers

"Dribbble is a community of designers answering that question each day. Web designers, graphic designers, illustrators, icon artists, typographers, logo designers, and other creative types share small screenshots that show their work, process, and current projects.

Dribbble is a place to show and tell, promote, discover, and explore design."
