Is Photoshop Remixing the World?

"Photoshop has completely revolutionized our visual culture. Artists now use Photoshop to create complex imagery that would have been impossible 20 years ago. It has also profoundly changed the art of photo retouching, turning a labor intensive process into an artful and often controversial digital workflow. But possibly the most current and expressive influence can be seen in meme culture online. With the ability to alter any image in the media landscape, everyday people now have the means to critically comment on culture and spread their ideas virally, leveling the playing field between traditional media creators and consumers. Photoshop has changed the way we communicate, the way we express ourselves, and the way we view the world and each other."

Airbrushed for change: feedback through Photoshop manipulation

"David Cameron's airbrushed poster campaign has backfired – setting off an internet craze of hilarious spoof versions.

On the mydavidcameron.com site jokers can adapt the 'we can't go on like this' adverts to poke fun at the 15ft–high picture of the Tory leader. ...

Meanwhile, a focus group report on the campaign poster said: 'The general message was that it had backfired as it fed into the concerns people have about David Cameron and the Tories – that something doesn't quite add up.'"

Sketch2Photo: Internet Image Montage

"PhotoSketch is an internet–based programme that can take [a] rough, labelled sketch ... and automatically turn it into the naff montage... Seems unbelievable but–as the video shows–it works.

According to authors, their software can take any rough sketch, with the shape of each element labelled with its name, find images corresponding to each drawn element, judge which are a better match to the shapes, and then seamlessly merge it all into one single image."
