Milos Rajkovic: Skinner Box Head

"Rajkovic creates animated portraits of anonymous archetypes with deconstructed heads and symbolic components that operate like finely tuned machines. Everything is fair game: a religious figure with alter, candles, and a rotating luxury car; U.S. military figures with weight-lifting Ronald McDonald, skeletons, praying hands, and a flat screen TV playing 24-hour cable news.

The brains of these figures are compromised–sometimes portrayed as dropping into a pool of blood or being picked at by a vulture-like bald eagle–so comprised possibly that they are missing the capacity for human empathy. Are they all portraits of psychopaths perhaps? I'm guessing that Milos' answer might be affirmative—these are the psychopaths who run your government, military, religious and corporate institutions."

Passive digital experience forms backdrop to annual trade convention

"Working with with illustrator and Art Director Katie Scott, we created an unique 15m x 3.5m animated wallpaper that slowly evolved over a 4 hour period. Created for Pernod Ricards' annual creative meeting on the private island of Embiez in the south of France and installed by Paris based Events agency Auditoire. The installation became a passive digital experience that functioned as a thought provoking backdrop to the schedule of creative speakers. Using 'Foley' artist Michael to create the audio effect and Lewis and myself to create the animation we were able to take Katie's illustration into an animated form, and her unique world became an animated experience."

Jean-Luc Godard: figures posing in order to be admired

"Godard is right at home here, especially following his 80s fare like Passion and First Name: Carmen. In this decade more than ever before, Godard was preoccupied with the fusing of image and sound, in the vein of Renaissance art and music. This means that he's obsessed with the human form, male and female bodies. Historically, this creates something curiously hybrid. While classical opera may have to do with bodies, Godard's style is decidedly closer to that of pre–Classical painting, with uncovered figures posing still in order to be admired or, better, worshiped. Godard's use of male bodies juxtaposing the females here fits nicely into his standard approach to bodies along with everything else: exchange of commodities. The transaction doesn't take place in the segment; the problem is an imbalance of supply with demand, a Marxist cliché that Godard is only too glad to inject into a series of films supposedly just about art and love."
