Remembering childhood and the nostalgia of home

(Natalia Chernysheva)

Natalia Chernysheva (2013). "Le retour" (The Return). Produced as student of the La Poudrière course at école du film d'animation.

The Man with the Beautiful Eyes: life lessons in childhood

"Charles Bukowski was a creature of perplexity and paradox, oscillating between romantic pessimism and luminous wisdom on the meaning of life, propelled by an outrageous daily routine. His expressive poems explored everything from the myths of creativity to his 'friendly advice' to young men.

In 1999, British animator Jonathan Hodgson and illustrator Jonny Hannah teamed up on a breathtaking animated adaptation of Bukowski's 1992 poem 'the man with the beautiful eyes' from his final and arguably best poetry collection, The Last Night of the Earth Poems."

O Menino e o Mundo (The Boy and the World, 2013)

Suffering from the absence of a father, a boy leaves his village and discovers a fantasy world dominated by machines, animals and strange aliens. An unusual animation with various artistic techniques that portrays the issues of the modern world through the eyes of a child.

The Magic Canvas (1948): An animated quest for freedom

"After the war years the studio made this beautifully fluid experiment in animation, a remarkable achievement before computers were born. The film shows how the union of the material and spiritual natures of man can lead to fulfilment. John Halas with the Hungarian designer Peter Foldes produced and directed Magic Canvas with an original score by Matyas Sieber, a student of Bella Bartok."

Year: 1948; Length: 10 mins; Production: John Halas, Joy Batchelor; Direction: John Halas; Script: John Halas; Design: John Halas, Peter Foldes; Animation: Wally Crook; Music: Matyas Sieber.

The Pillars of the Earth: hand-painted stop motion animation style

"We made this animation in BrosFx Studio. It is an opening to the TV series 'THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH', an adaptation of a book by Ken Follett. The series director is Sergio Mimica Gezzan, who cooperated, among others, with Steven Spielberg. Our goal was to create an animation which would render the colourful and vivid world of medieval England. The next step was to create a distinctive style that the audience would remember. After many tests, we opted for a hand painted stop motion, which suited perfectly the spectacle."
