Louise Bourgeois: a conversation with Bernard Marcadé 1993

"La vieille dame qui traverse la rue au bras d'un jeune homme barbu, c'est elle, Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010), dont l'histoire nous est d'abord brossée à grands traits par le biais de photographies tirées des archives familiales. La rencontre en chair et en os a lieu chez elle et dans son atelier, à Brooklyn, où elle entreprend une exégèse de son oeuvre dans une optique résolument psychanalytique. Rythmé par la visite de quatre sculptures ou "cellules" ("Choisy", "Hands and Glass Balls", "Arch of Hysteria", "Eves and Mirrors") avant leur départ pour la Biennale de Venise en 1993, l'entretien avec Bernard Marcadé et Jerry Gorovoy est placé sous le signe de la maison (familiale et symbolique) comme matrice de l'oeuvre. Au traumatisme de base, "fissure de la cellule familiale", car le père ramenait quantité de maîtresses, s'ajoute sa moquerie quant à l'absence de phallus de la petite fille. La passion pour la géométrie aux lois immuables, l'emboîtement des pièces, devient alors recherche de perfection et ironie : démolir des formes est posé en équation avec la destruction du père. L'oeuvre, riche en retournements, émerge du discours par l'humour et la vigueur des "show–off" de mamelles ou divers phallus érigés et animalisés."

Sonia Delaunay and the Art Simultané

"Together, the Delaunay [Sonia and Robert Delaunay] start a research on color that will be the essence, the content and the form but also the line of a new painting for a non–figurative art. Influenced by the Fauvism, she first presents works whose subjects and models are marked, slashed by the brutality of the shades. Creative perfection to aim at, the music offers to the artists, at this time, the philosophical assessment that will underlie their respective works. Powerful associations of rhythms and melodies, the compositions gather in the idea of 'simultaneous' what makes a new challenge for poets and painters. Sonia Delaunay then progressively develops a lyrical use and signification of the color, close from cubism, between rhythm and shade. Repetitions of forms, structures but also colors, her paintings take a direction all her artistic propositions will follow."

Dorothy Iannone's Innocent and Aware

Dorothy Iannone, "Innocent and Aware", 8 March 2013 – 5 May 2013, Camden Arts Centre in London.

"Iannone's portrayals of male and female sexuality celebrate the joy of her most intimate relationships while subverting traditional gender stereotypes of dominance and control. Through graphic paintings, sculptures and video boxes her works depict partly–clothed and naked figures on bright psychedelic backgrounds of flora, mandalas and biomorphic patterns. Recalling classical Indian erotic art, Egyptian frescoes and Byzantine mosaics, Iannone's intricate work communicates a personal narrative, passionate love affairs and lifetime pursuit of 'ecstatic unity' through transcendence and spirituality."

The Vorticists: a short-lived 20th century avant garde art movement

"The vorticists did not have many members; nor did the movement last long, because of unfortunate timing – it formed in 1914 as Europe hurtled towards war. By 1918 there was not much appetite for dogmatic groups such as theirs.

Nevertheless, the group holds an important place in 20th–century British art history.

'They were the first abstract modernist group in Britain,' said Stephens. 'It inevitably comes out of the revolution of cubism, but then, so does everything in the 20th century.'

They were part of a maelstrom of new, aggressive art 'ism' movements, not least the one practised by the Italian futurists, who were, in Lewis's eyes, the bad guys.

Stephens said: 'Unlike the futurists, who celebrate the energy of the machine and actual war as a purging force, the vorticists were engaged in more universal ideas of identity, time and movement in a philosophical sense.'"

Cindy Sherman - Nobody's Here But Me (1994)

"New York based artist, Cindy Sherman, is famous for her photographs of women in which she is not only the photographer, but also the subject. She has contributed her own footage to the programme by recording her studio and herself at work with her Hi–8 video camera. It reveals a range of unexpected sources from visceral horror to medical catalogues and exploitation movies, and explores her real interests and enthusiasms. She shows an intuitive and often humorous approach to her work, and reflects on the themes of her work since the late 1970s. She talks about her pivotal series known as the 'Sex Pictures' in which she addresses the theme of sexuality in the light of AIDS and the arts censorship debate in the United States."
