Rough Trade: destination store plugged-in to what its customers want

"'Ignoring technology is to ignore what has become a way of life for our customers,' said Rough Trade Retail director Stephen Godfroy.

The retailer, which has two shops, on Portobello Road and Brick Lane in London, has defied the gloom in a dwindling music retailing market. It generated a like–for–like sales hike of 30 per cent in the year to July 31. Godfroy said Rough Trade has benefited from tourism to the capital.

'Visiting Rough Trade is one of the things to do when you come to London and we're very proud of that,' he said. 'Tourism is an important factor in our success. We're a destination store.'"

The Google World Wonders Project

"From the archaeological areas of Pompeii to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, Google's World Wonders Project aims to bring to life the wonders of the modern and ancient world.

By using our Street View technology, Google has a unique opportunity to make world heritage sites available to users across the globe. Street View is a hugely popular feature of Google Maps which is already available in dozens of countries. It allows users to virtually explore and navigate a neighborhood through panoramic street–level images. With advancements in our camera technologies we can now go off the beaten track to photograph some of the most significant places in the world so that anyone, anywhere can explore them.

Street View has already proved a real hit for tourists and avid virtual explorers. The World Wonders Project also presents a valuable resource for students and scholars who can now virtually discover some of the most famous sites on earth. The project offers an innovative way to teach history and geography to students all over the world.

Our World Wonders Project is also supported by a broad, connected suite of other Google technologies, bringing wonders of the world within reach of an unprecedented global audience. The project website also provides a window to 3D models, YouTube videos and photography of the famous heritage sites.

The term 'National Statistics' is an accreditation kitemark which stands for a range of qualities such as relevance, integrity, quality, accessibility, value for money and freedom from political influence. Data classed as National Statistics provide an up–to–date, comprehensive and meaningful description of the UK's economy and society.

The Publication Hub delivers updates and provides statistical news releases for all new National Statistics. You can access these when they are available directly from this website or by subscribing to the RSS news feed.

The Publication Hub also provides links to statistical products and publications that are not classed as National Statistics. It is the only website where you can access past and present statistical releases. In addition, you can find information about when future statistical releases are going to be available.

Arts and Humanities Research Landscape

"Arts and humanities research represents the self–conscious and professional dimension of our reflexivity and curiosity in these areas. It is the deliberate and dedicated activity that generates, compiles, analyses, synthesises and propagates our deepest insights into who we are, where we have come from and the cultural expressions we have crafted for ourselves. While arts and humanities research makes a vital contribution to innovation, creativity and the success of many major sectors of the UK economy (such as creative industries and tourism) and informs public policy (for example in key areas such as law and social cohesion), it also plays a much more fundamental role in underpinning the quality of life and hence the wellbeing of society The UK government has begun to recognise that national wellbeing is not solely the result of the GDP, and the Office for National Statistics, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, and many regional governments are considering the significance of human and cultural capital to the wellbeing of the nation (e.g. see Paul Allin [ONS], 'Measuring Societal Wellbeing', Economic and Labour Market Review, 2007)."
