Tactical Media Files: a living archive of social-political action

"Tactical Media emerged when the modest goals of media artists and media activists were transformed into a movement that challenged everyone to produce their own media in support of their own political struggles. This "new media" activism was based on the insight that the long-held distinction between the 'street' (reality) and the 'media' (representation) could no longer be upheld. On the contrary, the media had come to infuse all of society.

To challenge dominant (strategic) structures in society, it was necessary develop new (tactical) means of producing and distributing media. Not a specialised task separate from the social movements, but a key activity around which social movements could coalesce. And of equal importance, the media environment characterised by a broadcast logic of geography was being supplemented with an environment characterised by a many-to-many logic of access.

Though much has changed these insights remain as valid today as they did in the early 1990s."

Squidsoup's Submergence light installation at Mexico Visual Art Week

"'Submergence', work by the Squidsoup collective, will be the only indoor piece in all of the [Mexico City] 2015 VAW festival, envisioned for a closed space. Like the name of the piece suggests, 'Submergence' proposes the audience to be immersed, inviting to stroll through it, which in an interactive process produces changes in the intensity of the lights, colors and sound expressions. With a narrative path composed of 4 parts of approximately 5 minutes each, an abstract story slowly takes shape with great poetic weight and added to the mutations that the audience contributes with their movements. The transition through subtle atmospheres introduces us to a magical and unreal world. Beyond the multiple meanings the spectator can perceive in free interaction with 'Submergence', the experience is key in itself, the possibilities this piece offers to perceive and enjoy all the senses at once."

"JODI has over the years built quite a reputation, especially with their notorious CD–rom OSS/**** (Mediamatic, Amsterdam 1998) which, immediately after installation, executes a takeover of the computer. In 1999 their work was part of exhibitions like Netconditions at the ZKM at Karlsruhe, The Allure of the Digitalat the Tate Gallery in London and the SONAR festival in Barcelona. They were awarded a number of international prizes, amongst which the Webby Awards in San Francisco. JODI disposed of this prize immediately, calling the DotCom–audience 'ugly %commercial sons–of–bitches'. In the year 2000 JODI was present at several international group–exhibitions and festivals, such as the Transmediale in Berlin and Deathmatch at Hangar in Barcelona Even an apparently obsolete medium like teletext did not escape JODI's interference. In 2000 they released their unusual way of thinking on 'Page 379' on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of this medium."

V2_Institute for the Unstable Media

"In the turbulent year of 1981 the building at Vughterstraat 234 in Den Bosch was squatted by a group of artists and musicians, including a young Joke Brouwer and an almost as young Alex Adriaansens. There was no place for their sounds, art or ideas in the established venues, so they created one of their own at 'V234,' quickly shortened to 'V2.' September 3 and 4, 1981 the first events where organized. In 1982, these pragmatic anarchists decided to organize themselves into a foundation, and V2_ was officially born."
