Digital Shoreditch: a digital and creativity tech festival

"Digital Shoreditch celebrates the outstanding creative, technical and entrepreneurial talent of East London and Tech City. We run monthly meetups, an enormous annual festival of the most talented digital and technical creatives, a comprehensive directory, hackathons, and more.

For Digital Shoreditch 2013 festival, Monday 20th–Friday 31st May, we'll have an awesome lineup of speakers for a week long workshop on everything happening in digital and tech, we're turning the basement of Shoreditch Town Hall into an extraordinary digital playground, and the incredible East London community will be sharing the love with a week of Open Studios, meetups and events."

HMV's woes do not signal the end for record shops

"But, for once, the smaller independent retailers could be among the winners. Despite HMV's inability to make high street music retailing pay, many independent record shops are already reporting higher demand and sales, due partly to a backlash against Amazon's tax set–up and the difficulty of stumbling across unexpected gems online.

Stephen Godfroy, co–owner of Rough Trade, a chain of three London shops including a 500 sq m (5,000 sq ft) warehouse off Brick Lane, east London, said business is 'the best it's ever been' in the company's 36–year history. He said Rough Trade sales in the latest quarter were up 8% on the previous year and the company is in the process of launching a new online store and an outpost in Brooklyn, New York.

'UK music is in rude health, despite the woes of the last outdated chain of entertainment retailer,' he said. 'The collapse of HMV is sad but ultimately a necessary process of renewal that will result in a significantly brighter future for UK music consumers.'"

Rough Trade: destination store plugged-in to what its customers want

"'Ignoring technology is to ignore what has become a way of life for our customers,' said Rough Trade Retail director Stephen Godfroy.

The retailer, which has two shops, on Portobello Road and Brick Lane in London, has defied the gloom in a dwindling music retailing market. It generated a like–for–like sales hike of 30 per cent in the year to July 31. Godfroy said Rough Trade has benefited from tourism to the capital.

'Visiting Rough Trade is one of the things to do when you come to London and we're very proud of that,' he said. 'Tourism is an important factor in our success. We're a destination store.'"
