John Stezaker: Resonating Nostalgic Lyricism

"In an image-saturated world, British collage artist John Stezaker rather creates more with less. Cutting up yesterday photographs, subtracting pieces, and juxtaposing faces, he transforms forgotten photographs and postcards into symbolic portraiture of modernism. Stezaker's artistic interests in examining hidden relations between images have bestowed international success and recognition upon him and his collage art. Gestalten.tv had a precious opportunity to speak with the artist at his exhibition in Berlin's Capitain Petzel Gallery."

Achterbahn: the story behind Berlin's abandoned Spreepark

"Norbert Witte hatte einen Traum: er wollte aus dem Berliner Spreepark–einem Freizeitpark, der zu DDR–Zeiten unter dem Namen »Plänterwald« berühmt geworden ist–den größten Rummelplatz des gerade wiedervereinigten Deutschlands machen. Stattdessen ging der König der Karusselle pleite und setzte sich mit seiner Familie und dem größten Teil seiner Gerätschaften im Jahre 2002 nach Peru ab. Er hinterließ der Stadt Berlin einen Riesenberg Schulden und ein großes Chaos. In Peru verwickelt er sich und seinen 20jährigen Sohn in Drogengeschäfte. Beide landen im Knast: Norbert Witte in Deutschland, sein Sohn in einem der härtesten Knäste der Welt…"

People On Sunday (Menschen am Sonntag)

"Perhaps owing to its use of non–actors, People on Sunday has a remarkably modern feel to it, and the cast never employ the exaggerated gestures or acting style one tends to find in silent cinema. If anything, the film has more in common with the French New Wave than it does the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) that was dominating German cinema at the time (Lang, Pabst, Jutzi.) The boyish playfulness of Erwin and Wolfgang combined with their romantic machinations (and partner swapping) is right out of Masculin Féminin or Bande à Part."

"The individual elements of the Bauhaus teachings are inscribed in a circular shape. The areas of the preliminary course and building are conspicuously delineated from the core of the instruction–the workshops with their accompanying subjects–by a drawn double ring. This is due to the special position that both of these teaching areas occupied: In order to even be accepted to the study programme at the Bauhaus, it was necessary to successfully complete the preliminary course. And only the most talented students could qualify for participation in the building theory course. The schema also indicates the length of the respective educational units."
