SandyStation: an augmented reality sandbox

SandyStation efektivním způsobem využívá senzorů Kinectu, který je umístÄ›ný ve výšce zhruba 2 metrů nad boxem s obyčejným pískem a používá se ke sledování hloubky na snímané ploše. Pokud na pískovišti udÄ›láte tÅ™eba bábovku nebo vyhloubíte díru, Kinect tuto informaci zpracuje a pÅ™edá unikátnímu programu, jež objekty rozpozná a následnÄ› pošle potÅ™ebná data projektoru a vykreslí obraz do prostoru pískovištÄ›. To vše se dÄ›je téměř okamžitÄ› v reakci na činnost, kterou uživatel na pískovišti vykoná."

And as translated from Czech to English using Google Translate: "This is a unique project of two students, Peter Altman and Robert Eckstein from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of West Bohemia, who present it under the name SandyStation. This is probably the first ever sand in the world, where you can edit the source code, firmware and play primarily lay off up to your imagination :–).

SandyStation effective use of the Kinect sensor, which is situated at a height of about 2 metres above the box with ordinary sand and is used to monitor the depth on the scanned surface. If the sandbox you do need a cake or drilling our hole, Kinect processes this information and passes a unique programme that recognizes objects and then sends the necessary data projector and paint a picture of the space sandbox. It all happens almost instantly in response to the action that the user performs the sandbox."

Simon Maddrell: transforming local ecologies through sand dams

"Over the past decade, Kenyan farmers with support from development organisations such as [Excellent Development who], have constructed hundreds of sand dams. Sand dams are reinforced concrete walls built across seasonal sandy rivers. During the intense rainy seasons, the dam fills with rainwater and sediment: silt flows over the dam whilst the heavier sand sinks. As the riverbed fills with sand, around 25–40% of the water by volume is stored in the voids. The sand filters the water and reduces contamination and evaporation. The dams also transform the local ecology. They raise the water–table, recharge the aquifer and increase downstream, dry–season flows.

Examples of sand dams are found throughout the dryland regions of the world but their wider adoption is limited by a lack of awareness, appropriate support and funding.

Sand dams are the cheapest form of rainwater harvesting –a typical dam costs less than £8,000 to build, requires negligible maintenance and provides water for life for around 1,200 people. They are cost–effective, community owned and sustainable. They transform lives and they transform fragile environments. What's not to like?"

Woman of the Dunes (Suna No Onna)

"Junpei Niki is an amateur entomologist. He aspires to discover a new kind of insect, and takes a weekend trip to the dunes to look for insects. He finds a village there, where villagers live in deep sand pits. He decides to stay at a widow's house in a pit just for a night. He learns that in this village in the dunes, residents must shovel the sand almost continuously to prevent the house from being buried in sand. The next day he realises that none of the villagers are coming back to pick him up. He makes several attempts to escape from the pit, and tries to force his excape through taking the woman hostage. No one in the village, however, cares Junpei's action since he is in danger himself unless he and the woman shovel the sand. Still dreaming of escape, Junpei gradually starts to feel comfortable and accepts his fate. While Junpei shovels with the woman, villagers deliver newspapers, a little alcohol and tabacco. The woman sleeps naked under the sand that continuously falls on her white skin, which is a scene Junpei likes to watch. The woman is almost idiotic and plain, but innocently aspires to buy a radio when her nightly work brings enough money. ... At the school where Junpei used to work, people decide to report his missing to the police, but they soon give up and forget him."
