What is a PLE?

"For students and lifelong adult learners, we can think of such a permanent home domain as a personal learning environment (PLE). It is not one particular cloud app, rather it is the 'pure web' with a toolset enabling the person/owner of that domain to constantly adapt it to new developments. It grows with the person over time and constantly reflects new 'interior designs' and 'remodeling' as needed. A PLE allows the owner of it to be a true author, contributor, and social interactor with the wider web ecology while still maintaining the stability of a personal home base on the web which is not dependent on the evolving marketing strategies of free portal services...

Unlike the 'exhibition model' digital portfolios, a PLE is much more naturally attuned to the authentic personal and professional needs of the owner. Of course, as in a digital portfolio, we all like to naturally exhibit/display new features. However the passive role of an 'exhibit' is only one of many features of a fluid PLE site. Along with exhibiting this or that project, a PLE might just as likely be hosting a discussion on a particular topic, asking visitors to complete a quick survey, providing a quick 'breaking news' report about storm damage in one neighborhood, contributing a 'how to' screencast video on a recently learned technique…the possibilities are endless!"

"An inspiring new website for digital culture and creative practices has been created by School of Art & Design academic Simon Perkins. The Folksonomy – www.folksonomy.co – is a knowledge commons and social bookmarking tool for digital culture and creative practice. The brainchild of Simon Perkins, as part of his research, the Folksonomy simplifies the process of clipping references and features photographs, videos and published documents. The Folksonomy is simultaneously a device for engaging with and a product of digital culture. It acts as a teaching tool for supporting the generation of ideas and digital culture creative practice. The research project is of a broader practice that extends from creative technology and design teaching and is focused on the nature of knowledge construction within digital culture environments. One of the unique aspects of the site is the way content is categorised, as it simultaneously belongs to multiple and sometimes contradictory categories, encouraging the viewer to make new discoveries. This sits in stark contrast to the more traditional logic conventionally employed by libraries and computer operating systems where books and files are organised according to a linear, centralised and hierarchical form. Simon says: 'The process of conceptualisation can be seen as an emergent process that involves the constant re–projection of prior understanding onto new and changing circumstances. The Folksonomy tool aims to support this type of tactical interaction through its use of linking and association.'"

Talis Aspire: shared UK-wide Resource List Management System

"Talis Aspire takes into account the rise of e–content, evolving pedagogy techniques, higher student expectations and user–generated content. Talis are fairly sure that they got the stock management aspect right with Talis List, so they took as the starting point of development the needs of students and academics, as well as the library. Essentially the VLE is still seen as the hub that co–ordinates services, and Aspire is designed to work with existing systems. A lot of academics seem to be using Moodle to provide their course reading, but at present it still mostly consists of links within Moodle to word documents or PDFs. Aspire has been designed to fit in with the look of the institution so that it can work with Moodle without the students necessarily knowing that they have even left Moodle. It integrates with e.g. Shibboleth/Athens and student registries, so that it's possible for students to be presented with the relevant lists as soon as they start a course (rather than having to seek out their lists). One of the goals of Aspire is to maximize the value of e–resources, so in–line content plays a big part–library catalogue information is displayed on the page, and you can embed e.g. e–books, articles and videos within the list. This looked particularly useful so the students can get to content quicker and should help them to access more e–resources. YouTube is easy to embed, but I was pleased that they were currently talking to the BUFVC to see if Box of Broadcasts could be directly embedded."
