It's estimated that the world's population will reach around 9 billion people by 2050, and then begin to fall. We are currently approaching 7 billion. Many of us living today will still be around in 2050. The question is: given our many social and environmental issues, how are 9 billion people going to learn to live sustainably by 2050?"

The Billionaires Bankrolling The US (and Australian) Right

"Oil billionaires Charles and David Koch's tremendous spending power and reach––what the media has dubbed the 'Kochtopus'––is unrivaled. The conservative nonprofit David founded, Americans for Prosperity, has said it plans to spend $45 million this election cycle, more than three times the $13 million the Democratic Governors Association has on hand as of mid–October. There's no way of knowing how much the Kochs have given to the AFP or any other group; new Senate legislation allows tax exempt nonprofits to raise unlimited funds without disclosure. Publicly, only about $3.9 million can be traced to the brothers, including a $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association from David, a former vice presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party."

Mashup 101: product placement via fake cable access show

"To the world this was a cable access arts and crafts show where an 89–year old hip woman known as Sue Teller taught her audience 'how to make something new from something old.'

The show did not only function as a really subtle product placement advertising campaign for Mountain Dew, it also promoted DIY user–friendly technologies and social networking. Not to mention recycling as a mayor green trend, without ever mentioning the word green. Now that is clever marketing!

It was created by Ecopop in response to the rising interest in DIY principles."

Ecosia: eco-friendly Internet search engine

"Ecosia is an eco–friendly Internet search engine backed by Yahoo, Bing and the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF). It basically works like any other search engine but, unlike others, Ecosia gives at least 80% of its advertising revenue to a rainforest protection programme run by the WWF.

Because of this, Ecosia users can save about two square metres of rainforest with every search they do – without paying anything. Furthermore, all Ecosia servers run on green electricity, so they do not cause any CO2 emissions. By using Ecosia, you can turn your web searches green."

Airbrushed for change: feedback through Photoshop manipulation

"David Cameron's airbrushed poster campaign has backfired – setting off an internet craze of hilarious spoof versions.

On the mydavidcameron.com site jokers can adapt the 'we can't go on like this' adverts to poke fun at the 15ft–high picture of the Tory leader. ...

Meanwhile, a focus group report on the campaign poster said: 'The general message was that it had backfired as it fed into the concerns people have about David Cameron and the Tories – that something doesn't quite add up.'"
