UK start-up product design agency Made In Mind

"Made in Mind was founded in 2009 by Matthew Judkins and Min–Kyu Choi. The duo met on the campuses of Imperial College and the Royal College of Art and formed the company to commercialise the Folding Plug design concept that Min–Kyu developed during his studies. Numerous individuals and organisations joined Matthew and Min–Kyu along the way to contribute to the development, funding and marketing of the concept which was realised in 2012 with the launch of the Mu. Made in Mind, now consisting of a diverse team of industry and technical professionals, are in the process of extending the product pipeline and placing the Mu on the global stage."

Folding Plug System: redesigning the UK 3-pin plug

"'Mac book Air,' Apple's latest master–piece, is the world's thinnest laptop ever. However, here in the U.K, we still use the world's biggest three–pin plug. Most people carry laptops with adapters and plugs because laptop batteries have limitations on the time they can be used. When people carry laptops with U.K plugs in a bag, it always causes problems such as tearing paper, scratching laptop surfaces and, sometimes, it breaks other stuff. The main problem is the UK standard 3–pin plug is not considered in the process of designing for mobility. My intention of the project was directed to make the plug as slim as possible and follow the British Standard regulation at the same time."

SMS Sugar Man: the first feature film shot entirely on a cell phone

"Aryan Kaganof's SMS Sugar Man has either the dubious or celebratory distinction – depending on your point of view of these kinds of things – of being the first feature film shot entirely on a cell phone, specifically the Sony Ericsson W900i. Given the film's strong sexual content, Sony probably won't be championing the film any time soon. But, in their absence, I will.

To Kaganof's grand credit, the technique in which the film was shot never comes across as being gimmicky. The majority of the movie is shot as any traditional movie is shot despite the unique camera being used. Every once in awhile we do get a direct POV shot from one of the characters holding his or her own camera, but this is used very sparingly and is thus unobtrusive.

Scenes are mostly lit and executed as if filmed with a traditional camera. What's most surprising about the movie is that one might presuppose – or, at least I did – that it would be comprised of mostly quick cuts. I don't own a cell phone with a camera, but I had assumed one of them could only hold small files for short scenes. Against expectation, Kaganof comprises SMS Sugar Man with fairly longish shots and gives the film a very lyrical tempo."

Design in the knowledge economy 2020

"By 2020 the UK must create a balanced and sustainable knowledge economy with design as a critical and central part. There is no other option. ...

In 2010, as we emerge from one of the most severe economic crises of the last century, it is clear that the balance of the economy must change. The country, brutally, is going to have to work and innovate to make its living. There are no more easy pickings off the back of a credit boom. Britain is going to self–consciously create a national innovation ecosystem to drive new growth sectors and companies – and design must be a critical part of that effort. Successful companies will be those which develop innovative products and processes, so creating new markets and reputations for themselves.

New ways of intervening have to be found. Public spending commitments or tax concessions – the traditional ways of achieving public policy goals – are going to be extremely constrained by the necessity to reduce Britain's budgetary deficit. The quest is on for policy levers that can deliver changed behaviour as effectively but more cheaply. ...
