Contents of John Peel's Record Collection to be Made Public

Die Antwoord: a provocative celebration of otherness

"If Die Antwoord are a joke, they're a painfully acute one. This over–the–top South African rap–rave trio, comprising rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser and a hulking DJ called Hi–Tek, purport to represent 'zef', a strain of working–class/underclass Boer' culture that perhaps most closely equates to our own pejorative term 'chav'.

The band's co–founder and frontman, Watkin Tudor Jones, aka Ninja, has previously appeared in a host of similar conceptual art–rap projects and situationist pranks."

Mixcloud: joining the dots between radio shows, Podcasts and DJ mixes

"Quite simply, Mixcloud helps connect radio content to listeners more effectively. Mixcloud is re–thinking radio by joining the dots between radio shows, Podcasts and DJ mixes. We refer to them as Cloudcasts – audio shows that are stored in the 'cloud' and available to be streamed on–demand.

A Cloudcast is an extended audio show that is hosted in the 'cloud', in other words hosted somewhere centrally on the Internet rather than on your local hard–drive. Therefore, unlike Podcasts, Cloudcasts can be enjoyed via on–demand streaming without any waiting required. ...

Mixcloud is a legal platform for on–demand radio shows, Podcasts and DJ mixes which contain copyrighted music. The only licensing option available at present is a streaming format, and Mixcloud is committed to providing a legal option which supports artists and ensures they receive royalties for the shows and mixes which contain music. In addition, the site can keep track of what you (and your friends) listen to, so we can make better recommendations and provide a more personalised site tuned to exactly what you like to hear."

"the World Wide Web [has become] a space of converging multimedia praxis, has become a vast experimentation and exploration ground with countless artistic ramifications. As it is often related to a solitary adventure led in a very intimate relationship with one's machine, the virtual experience is seldom extended to another dimension of time–space. Projects involving network actors only take place in closed circles, within the network, and hardly ever outside, within a live performance environment. The idea of the WJ's project is to disrupt this tendency by offering a strong, captivating, sensual and slightly altered cybernetic surf where the feeling of being immerged in the flow and the extreme pleasure of browsing are shifted to a live performance environment. Individual and collaborative online productions (in different geographical sites) become collective events (to which an audience is invited). In this way, Wjs become flux stalkers and offer things to see, hear, feel, observe and think about, through a progressive and dynamic process. Guided by their critical spirit and their own personal outlook, they reveal the fragrance of the Web, defragment and confront worlds that make the invisible become visible."

"A DJ is somebody who exemplifies 'authoring by selection,' they are an example of how anti–montage aesthetics of continuity cuts across culture and is not limited to the creation of computer still and moving images and spaces. DJ?s art is measured by their ability to seamlessly go from one track to another. A great DJ is thus a compositor and anti–montage artist par excellence. They are able to create a perfect temporal transition from very different musical layers; in real time, in front of the dancing crowd."
