The enduring legacy of The World At War

"The World at War had many strengths but the key to its success as compelling history television was the formidable array of interviewees. Top military leaders, including German naval commander Karl Doenitz and the head of RAF Bomber Command, Arthur Harris, had their say alongside humble soldiers, sailors and airmen. Key politicians like wartime foreign secretary Sir Anthony Eden shed light on the war's wider arc, while ordinary citizens told of events from their perspective. Several members of Hitler's inner circle were also tracked down and interviewed, including his valet, secretary and adjutant. Death camp survivors told their terrible tales, as did a few of their shamefaced captors. More years have now passed since the making of The World at War than elapsed between 1945 and the programme's first showing in 1973. So, sadly, a programme like this can never be made again: the number of living witnesses to World War II is dwindling every day. We are fortunate that Isaacs and his team had the vision and talent to make The World at War when they did."

Visit to Picasso: painting on glass

"'Visite à Picasso' is a classic documentary by dir. Paul Haesaerts which features the frequently used footage of Picasso painting on glass while a camera films him from the other side. The trick of filming thru (sic) glass allows the viewer to witness Picasso's true genius as he paints his famous Torros with just a few well–placed brushstrokes. Shot in beautiful black and white in Picasso's home in Vallauris, the film is a poetic treatment of the master–painter."

EvoFIT Facial composite system for identifying suspects to crime

"A facial composite is a picture of a suspect to crime (as seen on TV crime programmes and in the newspapers). Traditional composite systems used by the police require witnesses to describe an assailant's face and then to select individual facial features (producing a "composite" face). This process does not work well: we are not good at describing faces nor selecting individual features.

We have developed a different approach at the University of Stirling and the University of Central Lancashire. Unlike current systems, faces in EvoFIT are modelled in their entirety and are not separated into component parts. A facial composite (the new term for 'photofit') is created by first displaying a number of faces containing random eyes, noses, mouths, etc. A witness selects a few of these faces that are most similar to a criminal. The selected faces are then mixed or 'bred' together to produce another set for selection. Repeated a few times allows a composite to be 'evolved'."
