Resolume: VJ Software for producing realtime generated visuals

"Resolume is created by Edwin de Koning & Bart van der Ploeg together with Tim Walther, Daniel Berio, Joris de Jong, Menno Vink and a few specialized freelancers.

Resolume was born because we wanted to VJ. But we wanted to do it better. Back in 1998 VJ-ing was done with VHS tapes and an mx50 video mixer so it was hard to quickly improvise video to music because tempo could not be adjusted, or even reversed. Effects were limited to what the mx50 had to offer. We thought software would allow us to improvise more and be a better VJ.

We could not find any VJ software that did what we wanted back in 1998 so we started programming our own. We quickly realized our software was much better than our VJ-ing so we work on Resolume full-time since 2002."

DataisNature: weblog of computational art

"Dataisnature is a weblog of personal and recreational research containing information and links covering the following topics - Robot Art, Algorithmic and Procedural Art, Computational Aesthetics, Glitch Aesthetics, Vj'ing, Video Art, Computational Archaeology and similar subjects. My impetus behind this weblog is to share and collate my findings in a central repository and publish for the benefit of interested communities."

Quayola: evolving graphical compositions

"Quayola is a visual artist based in London. His work simultaneously focuses on multiple forms exploring the space between video, audio, photography, installation, live performance and print. Quayola creates worlds where real substance, such as natural or architectural matter, constantly mutates into ephemeral objects, enabling the real and the artificial to coexist harmoniously. Integrating computer-generated material with recorded sources, he explores the ambiguity of realism in the digital realm.

Working in both the artistic and the commercial field, Quayola intelligently experiment with mediums traditionally perceived as separate. Currently active as Visual Artist, Graphic Designer and Director, he constantly collaborates with a diverse range of musicians, animators, computer programmers and architects. Quayola creates hybrid works blurring the boundaries between art, design and filmmaking."

Fig.1 2007/8, Live Audiovisual Performance, 1, 2 or 3ch HD projection | 2ch sound, Duration: 40:00, PTA is a live audio-visual performance focusing on precise synchronisations between sound and image. It is a result of multiple collaborations with various musicians worldwide.

Inspired by waveforms, PTA takes form as a central spine where ever-evolving graphical compositions grow from and within.

Tagtool: a collaborative performative visual drawing tool

"The Tagtool is a performative visual instrument used on stage and on the street. It serves as a VJ tool, a creative video game, or an intuitive way of creating animation.

The system is operated collaboratively by an artist drawing the pictures and an animator adding movement to the artwork with a gamepad. The design achieves virtually unlimited artistic complexity with a simple set of controls, which can be mastered even by children.

The project is coordinated by OMA International. Our approach is that all knowledge acquired within the Tagtool project should be shared. We are inspired by the open source movement and believe that it is also relevant for the digital arts."

wj-s.org: weejays, webjays, webjockeys ...

"the World Wide Web [has become] a space of converging multimedia praxis, has become a vast experimentation and exploration ground with countless artistic ramifications. As it is often related to a solitary adventure led in a very intimate relationship with one's machine, the virtual experience is seldom extended to another dimension of time-space. Projects involving network actors only take place in closed circles, within the network, and hardly ever outside, within a live performance environment. The idea of the WJ's project is to disrupt this tendency by offering a strong, captivating, sensual and slightly altered cybernetic surf where the feeling of being immerged in the flow and the extreme pleasure of browsing are shifted to a live performance environment. Individual and collaborative online productions (in different geographical sites) become collective events (to which an audience is invited). In this way, Wjs become flux stalkers and offer things to see, hear, feel, observe and think about, through a progressive and dynamic process. Guided by their critical spirit and their own personal outlook, they reveal the fragrance of the Web, defragment and confront worlds that make the invisible become visible."
